| Donate Your
Old Bike
Every year Americans put about 22 million used bicycles into landfills. Do
have you have one or more old bikes in your garage you would like to get rid
of? Instead of bringing them to the dump, leaving them for bulk waste pick up
or pillaging them for spare parts, how about donating them to non-profit organizations
that will send them abroad to impoverished people who need them for daily transportation?
Pedals for Progress at www.p4p.org and the
International Bicycle Fund at www.ibike.org will
take your bike, get it running in optimal condition and send it countries in
South America, Africa and Asia, for the use of people who do not have cars and
who need bikes to get to work, school, food pick up sites or health care. It
goes without saying that having a cheap, non-polluting form of transportation
that exercises the body is a great help to others. P4P is located in New Jersey
and collects bikes from central New Jersey and parts of New York and Pennsylvania.
Between 1991 and 2006, P4P sent 99,000 bicycles abroad. IBF located in Seattle,
WA, is a much larger organization that not only donates bikes, but engages in
advocacy and program development in the Third World to increase bicycle usage.
